What is an Unsecured Debt?

A loan that is not backed up by collateral, such as property or money. It differs from secured debt, which is backed up, or secured, with collateral. Credit card debt is an example of unsecured debt because credit is granted to a cardholder without the need for collateral. A home equity loan is an example of secured debt because it is secured by a physical home.
