What is a Credit Inquiry?

A request made by a potential creditor to a credit bureau for the bureau to share credit-report information on a consumer with them to help the creditor make a better-informed decision on whether to extend credit to the consumer. Credit inquiries take two forms: hard inquiries, which typically lower a consumer's credit score by a few points, and soft inquiries, which will not affect a consumer's credit score.
